Diner
Tuesday morning had come and it was time for shelby and I to head back up to the city for another party. Each time we arrive at jefferson's apartment I am increasingly more comfortable. We were greeted at the door with a hello kiss from jefferson, we dropped our bags to their seemingly designated place on the floor in the living room and shelby headed straight to the bed for a nap. I ended up on the couch resting a bit after the long drive. Jefferson busied himself on his computer.
After a short nap, having been woken up by shelby and jefferson's loud sex, I made my way to the kitchen to wash the dishes. While I was at it I scrubbed the counter and stove tops as well.
Not that they were particularly dirty, mind you, it just seemed natural after wiping down the sink.
Just as I was finishing up in the kitchen shelby walked in for a glass of water. We all settled on the couch chatting. I was looking around this apartment that had become so familar so quickly, but I still look around, taking inventory of it all each time.
I noticed a rather large pile of papers on the bookshelf near the front door.
I inquired about it.
The response I got was an exasperated one from shelby, "That's his mail. He gets a ton of it and never reads it." Jefferson adds that sorting it is on his very long list of things to do.
I offer to do it for him. It looks to be a nice little challenge.
He is quick to offer it up as a project for me. I removed all the mail from the bookshelf and piled it in the middle of the living room floor, arranged the bookshelf neatly, then set to work with the heap of papers. Shelby got excited about the project too so, she took a position next to me on the floor.
Shelby and I worked out a system we could both agree on; bills would go in one pile, misc. letters in another, the ex's mail would have a pile of it's own, as would anything for the kids.
Jefferson noted our progress.
He then retrieved four more bags of unopened and unsorted mail from the cabinets under the bookshelf.
I beamed at him.
Shelby and I sorted mail for several hours until there was only a small pile left. We'd been at it for a good portion of the afternoon when we realized, we had forgotten to eat. We'd decided on a diner just a few blocks away.
Shelby and I have a bit of a thing for diners. One night in the early hours of the morning we were watching the food network and there was a piece on desserts. One particularly scrumptious looking dessert came onto the screen and was from the Comfort Diner in NYC, we looked at eachother and in unison said, "we have to eat there." So, jefferson humored us and took us to our diner.
Afterall, we would need sustenance for the evening's gathering.

If there was huge bags of mail piled up from several months - wouldn't there be past due bills for essential services like electricity and water and such? What's up with that?
